Mahalia Barnes and her band The Soul Mates will be joined on the bill by Jimmy Barnes, The Living End, and Troy Cassar-Daley, at Robert Oatley Vineyards on Saturday, November 1.
Rock legend Jimmy Barnes was forced to take it easy following complications from elective back surgery recently, but Mahalia said that to everyone’s relief knocked it out of the park in his first show back at the Enmore Theatre last week.
“It was really fantastic, I was very relieved, we were all holding our breath before the first show and he absolutely smashed it,” she said.
“I would go so far as to say that he was signing better than ever.
“He’s a stubborn one, he wasn’t going to go down easy I can tell you that.”
The local concert begins the run of ADOTG concerts, which Mahalia said that she is looking forward to and next weekend won’t be her first show at Robert Oatley Vineyards.
“I can’t wait for the A Day On The Greens, I’ve been lucky enough to do a fair few over the years and I was actually in Mudgee for the 2007 concert,” she said.
“It’s always a really special day, there’s a great energy, a beautiful setting and the people are there for a great time.”
She added that a lot of things have changed in her life since the 2007 show and that she can’t wait to play the material off of her latest album.
“I’ve grown a lot as a performer in those seven years, I’ve got a five-year-old now, and I’ve done hundreds of gigs in that time,” she said.
“My band and I have been playing together for a long time now, we’ve made a couple of albums and we’re a solid unit and hopefully we’re getting better and better.
“We just finished recording a new album in July and we’ve got a bunch of new songs to play, we’re very inspired and loving it.”
The concert is supporting Jimmy Barnes’s album 30:30 Hindsight, and the tour is a celebration of his three decades as a solo artist.
“This is a really special one and we’re all in celebration mode, 30 years as a solo artist is a huge achievement plus the years in Cold Chisel, it’s more than lots of peoples’ lifetime,” Mahalia said and added that having Jimmy as a father has been a source of inspiration for her own career.
“I love being on tour with him, I’ve been in his band for about 17-18 years now and I love it,” she said.
“He gets up every show and gives 100 per cent and he walks off stage with nothing left to give.
“He’s given me a real drive to work harder and it’s a lesson to any aspiring performer that you’ve got to really love what you do and keep working, you never slack off.”
