Mudgee Rotary Club’s donation will help to equip an isolation ward in a children’s hospital in Bo, Sierra Leone’s second largest city.
The Rotary Club of Turramurra started a program to open the first children’s hospital in Bo in 2008 and the hospital opened two years ago.
The project was begun in response to the low life expectancy in Sierra Leone and high child and maternal mortality rate.
Life expectancy at birth in Sierra Leone is estimated at 47.5 years. One in six infants dies at birth (in Australia it is one in 200).
The common causes of deaths of children under five include malnutrition, diarrhoea, malaria and respiratory diseases including tuberculosis
Now, Ebola has reached Bo and the Children’s Hospital urgently needs an isolation ward.
Mudgee Rotary’s donation to the Bo Children’s Hospital Foundation was the final amount needed to equip the ward, which is expected to be in use soon.
