Mudgee Police, Mudgee Rescue Squad, NSW Fire & Rescue and Ambulance were called to the accident near Windamere Dam around 7.25am.
Police said the southbound Toyota Hilux towing a trailer appeared to have veered to the side wrong side road and hit a guide rail. The vehicle toppled 30 metres down a steep, rocky embankment, trapping the driver.
A passing motorist saw the vehicle was on fire and extinguished the flames.
The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Bathurst man, suffered lacerations to his right shoulder and was airlifted to Orange Base Hospital.
The Castlereagh Highway was closed from 8.45am while the medical rescue helicopter landed on the road to transfer the driver to hospital.
Traffic was diverted via Bylong Valley Way, Lue Road and Rocky Waterhole Road during the transfer.
