To get a jump start on their third season in the State League One competition, the Mariners played a trial match against competition new boys Rydalmere.
The Mariners played the north-west Sydney club in the under 20s and first grade at Glen Willow a week ago, and in the wash up of that event, Football NSW Western branch manager and Mariners coach Andrew Fearnley was happy with what he saw.
“In review of last year we started too late and we were playing catch up,” Fearnley said.
“This year we wanted to start earlier. We had a month off at the end of the season and started to get back into it.
“The boys were happy to play a game before Christmas.”
Rydalmere who won the State League Two competition have been promoted to the State League One competition.
The under 20s loss 3-2 while first grade won 1-0.
“It was good to play a team who is in our competition,” Fearnley said.
“It was the 20s first get together and they played well.
“It was a good game for us because we get to see where we are at, and look at our structure and give us something to build on for next season.”
The Mariners will have a break over Christmas and new year before they meet up in early 2015.
