The total prize pool for the 2015 Mallee Men hosted tournament is a touch over $13,000 and with some of the strongest Country Rugby League clubs entering, next year’s event is set to be one of the most exciting competitions in recent memory.
“I think it will be, we’ve had an overwhelming response for next year’s tournament,” knockout coordinator Peter Campbell said.
“Especially from Group 9, we’ve got eight of 11 first grade teams from Group 9.”
Group 9 will be represented by both of 2014’s grand finalists, South City Bulls and Albury Thunder, along with Wagga Brothers, Wagga Kangaroos, Temora Dragons, Gundagai Tigers, Junee Diesels and Tumbarumba Greens.
Group 20 is the next heavily represented, with hosts West Wyalong joined by Leeton Greens, Yenda Blueheelers and Lake Cargelligo Sharks, while Group 11’s Forbes Magpies and Group 8’s Woden Valley Rams and Queanbeyan Blues will also compete.
“We’ve also got four clubs on the stand-by list in case there are pull outs, which does happen, but not often,” Campbell said.
“Goulburn Workers are top of the list and then Dubbo Westside (Group 11), Darlington Point and Yanco Wamoon (Group 20) are also on the list should any other clubs pull out.”
CYMS skipper Mick Sullivan has made no secret of his desire for the green and golds to win a West Wyalong title, and has taken his side to the rich knockout competition each year since he took over as captain-coach.
2015 will be the club’s fifth crack at the title, with semi-final berths in 2011 and last year CYMS’ best results.
“A winner will be very hard to pick from this group,” Campbell said.
“Albury and South City have lost a few, but are good sides. West Wyalong and Lake Cargelligo played in the Group 20 grand final last year, CYMS are always up there, they just haven’t cracked a final yet.
“Forbes are supposed to be looking good and I think Temora might be a real dark horse.”
The 2015 West Wyalong knockout will be held over the weekend of February 27 and 28.
