Murray became a weapon of choice with the Kookaburra in hand, collecting 5-30 from his nine overs and stopping Lawson Park Hotel at 130 – only 29 runs short of victory.
His first victim at Cahill Park was Bradley Golden (32) in the 25th over, destroying an important 37-run third-wicket partnership. Brad and younger brother Kurtley (25) went about restoring Lawson Park’s innings after being 2-32 in the 16th over.
But Murray didn’t stop there, taking the wickets of Chris Tomasella, James Ford, and Greg Croake for less than 15 runs and eventually picking up Kurtley’s wicket too.
At 6-101 in the 34th over it was always going to be hard for Lawson Park to score a winning total of 159. Brad’s twin brother Jamie pitched in with 20 runs late in the innings but it was not enough.
Earlier in the day three consecutive sixes from Woolpack skipper Jacob Edmonds to close out his side’s innings may have dealt a mental blow to Lawson Park.
Edmonds (45 not out) scored a maximum off Jaylen Huia’s final ball, taking the swing bowler’s figures to 2-26 off eight overs. The Woolpack captain then pumped James Ford (1-51 off seven) for another couple of sixes in the 40th over. In the final four overs, Lawson Park went for 44 runs – perhaps another telling tale.
The highest Woolpack partnership came from a second brother pairing in Mitchell (19) and Donald (12) Hearn, who opened the batting and put on 41 for the first wicket. A handy partnership for Woolpack also came from Klay Marchant (24) and Wade Barrow (27) who put on 38 for the fourth wicket after previously being 3-49 in over 21.
Lawson Park’s Jamie Golden continued his good form with the ball, producing figures of 3-21 off 10, while Huia’s performance was also noteworthy. The Parkers were a 10-man team on Saturday, missing regular players including Hayden Cox and Darren Snyder.
