The regrettable decision came after three-year-old filly One Last Poet’s most recent run at Dubbo caused concern with veterinarians examining her.
“They had the vet go to the horse after it ran poorly in Dubbo on the 22nd (of March), it was the favourite for the race and ran unplaced,” Racing NSW Country general manager Scott Kennedy said.
“The horse was dull and lethargic and hadn’t eaten, and it didn’t really recover from the run so it’s in the best interests of the horse not to run this weekend spell it.
“It is disappointing for him (Thompson) but he is a very good trainer and I expect him to win it (Country Championship) at some stage.”
Mudgee still has one chance in the big race with six-year-old gelding Binalong Road set to tackle the best horses from country New South Wales has to offer with Hugh Bowman set to get the ride for Mack Griffith.
