The man died after residents reported hearing a number of shots fired in Salmon Reserve on the corner of Mulga and Wilga Streets about 4.35pm.
He is believed to be aged in his late 20s and from Greenacre in Sydney's south west.
On Tuesday, police confirmed they were still hunting for a group seen taking off in a blue 4WD car shortly after the shots were heard. The man is believed to have been deliberated targeted, police said.
"Detectives have been on the scene all night and are working with the homicide squad," a spokesperson for NSW Police said on Tuesday morning.
After arriving at the scene on Monday, dozens of police cordoned off surrounding streets and sections of Punchbowl Road as the search continued for a group seen in the park shortly before the shooting.
Mulga Street resident Marie said her neighbours had seen a group of men "hanging around the park" which she described as safe and peaceful.
"It's a very, very safe place," Marie said.
"I've been living here for 20 years and nothing happened like this ever."
