Former Jockey Gill, now based in Gulgong, celebrated her first winner as a trainer when He’s Guilty won the Bendigo Bank Maiden Plate (1300 metres) on Saturday.
Riding as Emma Telfer, she rode 32 winners in New South Wales and two in Tasmania, the most important win being aboard Newtons Rings in the $100,000 listed Pacesetter Stakes at Gosford in 2007.
Coming from last in Gilgandra, He’s Guilty ridden by Parkes jockey Tiffany Jeffries finished strongly on the outside to defeat Intombi (Sophie Young, 3.20 favourite) and Octajewel (Greg Ryan, 3.40).
Another Gulgong trainer Brett Thompson also had a winner at Gilgandra, Ice Cream Lady in the 3D’s Butchery Maiden Handicap (1000 metres).
A two year old filly part owned by Andrew Ferguson at Wellington, Ice Cream Lady had been placed at Bathurst and Dubbo for Sydney trainer David Pfeiffer before coming to Brett Thompson last month.
Taken to the early lead from the outside barrier by Greg Ryan, Ice Cream Lady (1.60 favourite) won by two lengths from Balerdee Bob (Jeff Kehoe, 61.00) and Lord Nick (Kody Nestor, 26.00).
Ice Cream Lady’s win in Gilgandra followed on from Thompson’s recent success with Nothin’lieca Poet in Dubbo and Iwilldoit in Gunnedah.
Greg Ryan then gave the Garry Lunn, Dubbo trained Consented (2.40 favourite) a cosy run behind the leading pair before breaking clear to account for Steam Machine (Tony Cavallo, 5.00) and Solar Kitty (Leanne G. Henry, 3.50) in the Candler Hay Gilgandra Class One Handicap (1800 metres).
Recently transferred to David Smith, Little Queen was a first-up winner for the Mudgee trainer in the Royal Hotel Benchmark 45 Handicap (1000 metres) at Gilgandra.
The well supported Little Queen (Kody Nestor, 4.60) set the pace and relishing the heavy track won by nearly five lengths from Cadeen (Greg Ryan, 9.00) and Path To Freedom (Aaron Sweeney, 3.20 favourite).
Aaron Sweeney, a former rider on the picnic circuit, is going well as an apprentice at Kembla and notched another winner, the Kylie Kennedy, Narromine trained She’ll Avago in the Royal Hotel Benchmark 45 Handicap (Division 2) over 1000 metres.
In the last stride She’ll Avago (3.50 favourite) edged out Letyahairhangdown (Adam Sewell, 3.60) by a nose with Spirited Addiction (Glen Lynch, 12.00), third.
Bathurst trainer Paul Theobald continued a successful season and apprentice Aaron Sweeney completed a double when Tiger’s Story won the Sporties at Gil Benchmark 50 Handicap (1550 metres).
From back in the field, Tiger’s Story (7.00) rushed home to beat another Bathurst horse, the Keven Higgins trained Tiger Bassie (Tony Cavallo, 10.00), by a neck, with the pacemaker Who Gives A Hoot (Kody Nestor, 2.40 favourite) finishing third.
Ridden by Allan Chan for Tamworth trainer Sue Grills, Border Flight (6.00) came from midfield to win the final even, the Tatts Hotel Benchmark 55 Handicap (1300 metres) from Nosey Inn (Greg Ryan, 3.80 favourite) and Dae More Knight (Jamie Gibbons, 12.00, 6.00).
