The cycling event, a major fixture on the region’s sporting and tourism calendar, was not held in 2014 as a result of concerns about traffic management.
The Mudgee Rescue Squad felt they could not conduct traffic management at the 2014 event, after experiencing abuse from motorists, some of whom ignored the traffic controllers’ directions and driven around stop signs in an attempt to beat cyclists.
The return of the event will be welcomed not only by keen cyclists but also by the tourist industry.
The event brings hundreds of visitors to the district, who when not competing in the weekend events, also enjoy the accommodation, shops and restaurants the region has to offer.
Cyclists who return home after an enjoyable sporting and social experience in the Mid-Western Region will spread the word about the event and the area and encourage others to attend.
Hopefully, the cyclists will also be made to feel welcome by drivers on the local roads this weekend.
Remember that cyclists have a legal right to use the road and exercise courtesy and patience if you meet them along your route.
Remember too that the traffic controllers are doing an important job, for the safety of all concerned, and should be treated with respect.
There is room on the local roads for cyclists and vehicles, but only if all road users treat each other with consideration and respect.
