Despite Western NSW rating as one of the fattest areas in Australia (63.7 per cent of people are overweight or obese), the Mid-Western region has seen a rise in the number of physical activities and events encouraging us to put on our sneakers and get outdoors.
Hundreds of locals and visitors from across the state will take part in one of four events -marathon, half-marathon, 10km fun run, and 5km fun run - during the Mudgee Running Festival on Sunday.
They aren’t all triathletes or marathon runners either - although they will be out in force early in the morning.
Runners taking part in the fun runs over the years have ranged from children to grandparents, and people of all ages and fitness levels in between.
It’s great to see so many people getting involved in events like these that encourage both social interaction and physical fitness - especially when the region as a whole is at a greater risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
Maybe next year even more people will decide to pull on their sneakers, grab a water bottle, and go for a run.
