The polo returns to Mudgee this weekend for the inaugural ‘City v Country’ tournament.
It is the first time the Mudgee Polo Club has hosted an event like this, and such has been the success of the polo since its return this year, the club intends this weekend’s trophy to remain perpetual.
With so many visitors in town for the Mudgee Wine and Food Festival, the tournament is the perfect way to see out what has been a wonderful event over the past month.
Food and wine on the sidelines at the polo is a match made it heaven, but don’t be fooled – Sunday’s competitors will be fiercely contesting the Parklands Resort Challenge Cup and the Property Shop City v Country match.
Quality Players from around the state will converge on Mudgee, including Sam Gunn (Condobolin), Angus Gunn (Bylong Valley) and James Hockey (Quirindi), as well as local players from Mudgee and Gulgong, notably James Darmody.
Andrew Williams (Forbes) is perhaps the tournament’s biggest coup, having represented Australia on many occasions, bringing with him a wealth of experience, knowledge and skill and will be extremely hard to beat.
Williams is also the Mudgee Polo Club captain and president Hugh Bateman said he is looking forward to seeing him in action once again.
“He’s played for Australia and is now the captain of our club,” he said.
“He’s now the junior Australian polo coach as well.
“We also have a number of other local Mudgee player including Andrew Rouse, Stuart Bowman, Leesa Bergan, Chantelle Rowland-Jones, Matthew O’Neill and Kirsty Sullivan.
“There will be some top class play in the City v Country game in particular.
“The field is in as good a condition as its every been and is only getting better.”
The Mudgee Polo Club are focused on bringing events like this to the region that not only showcase the sport, but give the crowd the opportunity to have plenty of fun.
“It’s going to be a great day,” Bateman said.
“The idea is to have it on the Sunday with the races on the Saturday so people can go along to that as well.
“After the final game which will finish at around 3.45pm and after we’ve done the presentations, we have live music, barbecues and a bar on field so people can stay on.”
Gates open 12pm, Parklands Resort. Gate entry: $20.
