Mid-Western Local Government Area is the worst performing in the Western region for alcohol related crashes.
In the five years 2010 – 2014, seven people were killed in the local area in alcohol related crashes and 53 people were injured.
From next week members of the Mudgee Liquor Accord will promote the campaign throughout December including a competition with each hotel, club, bottle shop and some restaurants giving away swags (valued at $250 each) for patrons who have a PLAN B to get home.
2MG will also be giving away $50 Cabcharge gift cards on air throughout the month.
“The prizes reinforce the PLAN B message that there’s always an alternative to drink driving - catch a cab, roll a swag out in the back of the ute or on a mate’s floor,” publican and Mudgee Liquor Accord chairperson Paul (Ozzy) Osseweyer said.
“Mudgee Liquor Accord is making a strong stand in discouraging their patrons from driving after a night out.
“The best advice for people planning a night out is to leave the car at home. That way there’s no temptation to try and drive home.”
Mudgee police have warned of extra RBTs over the Christmas period making chances of getting caught for drink driving even greater.
The Plan B drink driving campaign began in August 2012. It is about making positive choices to get home safely after a night out, highlighting that driving is not an option. Drink driving is one of the biggest causes of death and injury on NSW roads. In 2011, there were 70 people killed and 1182 people injured in crashes involving drivers who were over the legal blood alcohol limit. Men make up 87 per cent of drink drivers in fatal crashes.
