The village, 87 kilometres from Mudgee, is one of six sites shortlisted to house the facility including Cortlinye, Pinkawillinie and Barndioota (South Australia), Hale (Northern Territory) and Oman Ama (Queensland).
Sallys Flat and neighbouring Hill End sit within the Bathurst Regional Council Local Government Area.
Mid-Western Regional mayor Des Kennedy said the two councils are in talks over the issue.
“Mid-Western Regional Council has already liaised with Bathurst Regional Council about the issue, and I personally have spoken to Sallys Flat residents and adjoining land owners of the site,” Cr Kennedy said.
“Mid-Western Regional Council is planning on making a submission to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science in response to the announcement of a site at Sallys Flat being assessed as suitable for a national radioactive waste management facility.
“We will continue to be updated on the proposal over coming weeks and as always, will be representing our residents and lobbying on their behalf.”
The Hill End Anti-Nuclear Lobby hosted a public meeting on the proposal yesterday.
The meeting is the second in as many weeks with more than 100 residents attended a rally last Tuesday to voice their anger about the proposal.
Calare MP John Cobb has guaranteed no nuclear waste dump would be built in Sallys Flat if local residents remain “generally opposed” to it.
Communities have been given 120 days to lodge feedback on the plan. Representatives from the Department of Resources were due to meet with neighbouring landholders in Sallys Flat this week.
