The question asked of the speakers was ‘Why are country towns are still important?’
The first round of the competition was held at Mudgee’s Town Hall theatre with St Matthew’s Catholic School year 10 student, Manjot Kaur taking first place and progressing into the final to be held in Dubbo on April 3.
Mr Grant congratulated Manjot who spoke about how important the mining and agricultural industries are to the Mid-Western Region in supporting local business and providing jobs.
“It’s great to see so much talent in our region, public speaking is not the easiest of tasks and I congratulate Manjot on her win,” Mr Grant said.
“I am also pleased to announce that year 8 student Sophia Fay received the highly commended award.
“Sophia spoke about the importance of tourism and the wine industry in supporting the community.”
Mr Grant was joined by Mayor Des Kennedy, former NSW Upper House Members of Parliament Lloyd Coleman and Judy Jakins and Central West Lifestyle Magazine editor and soap box challenge adjudicator Elizabeth Tickle.
