Established in April 2003, Angel Flight Australia coordinates non-emergency flights to assist country people to access specialist medical treatment that would otherwise be unavailable to them because of vast distance and high travel costs.
Along with its rural NSW mission flights, Angel Flight coordinates road transports from city airports to hospital and back, taking patients and their families and carers into Sydney and Newcastle hospitals from western NSW communities, and home again.
Angel Flight has helped more than 3,000 patients, young and not-so-young, to attend medical appointments in major cities and towns, and in the next few months expects to reach the milestone of its 20,000th flight.
More than 800 flights over the last few years have taken patients to and from central west towns including Mudgee, Dubbo, Narromine, Parkes, Forbes and Orange.
All flights are free and assist passengers travelling to or from medical facilities almost anywhere in Australia. Passengers are driven by volunteers in their own vehicles to and from airports and hospitals.
Angel Flight volunteer pilots are not medically trained and do not carry aero-medical staff or medical equipment so do not act as an alternative to the Royal Flying Doctor Service nor Air Ambulance.
Angel Flight aids anyone who is medically and financially disadvantaged; families who have been financially devastated by medical bills due to illness, accidents or other chronic conditions, and those in need of transport on compassionate grounds.
Angel Flight can assist passengers on multiple occasions, such as attending follow-up appointments or undertaking a series of treatments for a condition.
Some patients have taken around 500 Angel Flights.
