The funding includes $150,000 for the bridge and shared user path along Ulan Road between Short Street and Lue Road and $89,669 for a pedestrian refuge at the Lewis and Market Street intersection. 

Mid-Western Regional Council general manager Brad Cam said the narrow path on the main traffic thoroughfare over the Cudgegong River posed a safety risk for both pedestrians and cyclists.  

“We’re very glad the State Government has recognised the need for a dedicated footbridge over the Cudgegong River, and provided funding to make it happen,” Mr Cam said. 

“Council and the community have long been aware of the significant safety risk that faced by more than 300 people who walk across this bridge each day.

“The danger and difficulties created by the very narrow existing footpath meant that this project was eligible for funding.”

Mr Cam said council will continue to search for funding for similar projects in other locations across the region.

“The pedestrian refuge on the corner of Lewis and Market Streets will provide significant safety improvements,” he said.

“Similar works have already been completed at several intersections near schools.”

Dubbo MP and Deputy Premier Troy Grant said more than 300 walking and cycling projects are being funded across the state to provide more opportunities for people to cycle and walk, improve safety and encourage more people to get active.

“If we want to encourage more people to leave the car at home and get active, we need to provide access to safe, convenient and connected walking and cycling networks,” Mr Grant said.

The project will be jointly funded by the State Government and council.
