The opening of the Gulgong Gold Experience on Sunday is a major achievement for community members, some of whom have worked for decades to create a site on Red Hill telling the story of the town’s gold rushes.

It is the latest in a series of projects that could build visitor numbers and tourism to the town.
The Gulgong Gold Experience will complement the Gulgong Pioneer Museum, Henry Lawson Centre, Prince of Wales Opera House and Gulgong Symbol Trail, as well as the planned Holtermann Museum in Mayne Street.
Together, the town’s attractions will allow visitors to literally wander through the town’s history.
Starting at the Gulgong Gold Experience, a visitor can learn about the indigenous owners, early settlers and gold discovery at Red Hill. A stroll via the Symbol Trail to the Holtermann Museum will allow them to picture the town in its roaring days, which in turns leads on to the story of Henry Lawson.
A visit to the Pioneer Museum will show them how the district’s pioneers’ way of life has changed over the year.
Few towns boast such as comprehensive illustration of an era which played a key role in Australia’s development.
What is even more remarkable about Gulgong’s institutions is that they have been developed and preserved largely through the efforts of the community.
Hopefully, the flow on effects of these projects will help to build further on the gold mine precinct around Red Hill, and even encourage the preservation of more historic sites and buildings around the town.
Community members who have worked and waited so long to have their vision realised are to be congratulated on a valuable addition to the town.
