On Wednesday, a Mudgee woman received a telephone call from a woman claiming to be a Centrelink employee.
The scammer told the woman she was owed back payments and repeated attempts had been made to contact her.
She was told her file had been sent to Canberra and she would need to contact a telephone number and provide details to collect the funds.
Although she believed it was suspicious, she said the scammer had an Australian accent and sounded legitimate.
“It would be convincing to most people,” the woman said.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deputy chair Delia Rickard said if you receive a phone call out of the blue from someone claiming to be from a government department and they claim that you are entitled to money, hang up.
