In the build up to the club’s third grade final in four years, Molong coach Graham Hobbs believes his side is riding a serious finals football wave, one potentially strong enough to carry the Magpies to the 2016 Graincorp Cup northern title.
The Magpies travel to Trangie for Saturday’s decider to take on the only side Molong is yet to beat this winter.
But Hobbs is confident his underdog outfit has what it takes to claim the title.
“I think we’re our best at the right time of year,” Hobbs said.
“We’ve got that blend of experienced guys who’ve been there for the grand finals and then there’s the youth coming through … they’re doing a great job.
“We’ve been the underdog all finals really. We’ve beaten everyone except for Trangie so far this year.
“I think it’ll be a different story on Saturday.”
As he alludes to, Hobbs is hoping for a vastly different result from the 25-5 loss in Trangie on July 9.
That day, his side didn’t have a full compliment of players to make the two hour trip from Molong to Trangie, and it showed.
But after a rousing performance to knock off a highly fancied Geurie Goats outfit in the minor semi-final before accounting for the Wellington Redbacks in the preliminary final last weekend, Hobbs said the Magpies have the runs on the board to take on Trangie in the big dance.
“They’re a big town, a one-team town and the only sport they play is rugby. They’re well supported and have a full bench each week,” Hobbs said.
“But we’re building too. And if we can get the win, the boys will be over the moon.”
Hobbs said the likes of Josh Peffer, Kyle Travis and Will Oldham have been outstanding for the Magpies this season, as they look to add the 2016 northern title to the 2014 southern crown won two years ago.
The 2016 Grancorp Cup northern grand final will kick-off at 3.15pm at Trangie on Saturday.
