Gulgong Craft Group is spreading the knowledge of traditional craft techniques further, adding an evening session to allow working people to take up sewing, crocheting, knitting, spinning, quilting and more.

The group’s evening meeting time, from 7.30pm to 10pm on Thursday night, means working people and parents with children can come along to make something new and learn from the group’s crafters.
The group has also moved its midweek meetings to Tuesday, 11am to 3pm, which has allowed more members to attend.
Gulgong Craft Group meets at Red Hill School, in an 1867classroom that was once the Cullenbone School. The schoolhouse makes an ideal home for a group focused on education, friendship and traditional craft techniques.
Craft Group president Christine McGregor said the group was an extraordinary hub of crafting expertise, with members skilled in such arts as leatherwork, felting and basic beading, and happy to share their skills with novices.
"These are all the things that people did before we had electricity," Ms McGregor said.
The group also has an extensive library of books on all aspects of cottage craft accessible to members. The group will be taking their expertise to the upcoming Chinese Gold Festival, teaching visitors young and old to make Chinese paper lanterns and dragon puppets.
Everyone is welcome to join the Gulgong Craft Group, and it’s not just for women.
Ms McGregor pointed out that sailors used to knit at sea, and the Craft Group has successfully taught a gentleman recruit to spin.
