Blue Wren defended their Mudgee Basketball Women’s A Grade title downing a gallant GSH Roadrunners side in the grand final on Sunday.
Unfortunately Roadrunners had to compete with only four players, which effectively had them on the back foot immediately against the defending premiers – making it even more difficult to score an upset victory.
Blue Wren were ahead 15-2 at the end of the first quarter, before stretching the advantage to 27-10 at the half time break.
They were well on track for back-to-back titles heading into the final quarter at 37-17.
However, Roadrunners had tried hard all game and they did receive a little reward for their efforts when in the last quarter they outscored their opponents 16-8.
Not enough to close the big lead Blue Wren built but a positive to take away from the match none the less.
Jen O’Brien was the Country Physio Most Valuable Player.
Men’s B Grade, Ghost Squad def Desperados 37 to 32.
In a close game Desperados were leading 7-4 at the first break, which was followed by an even matched 5-all second quarter.
After the big break momentum began to swing the way of Ghost Squad after they won the third quarter 7-3 as they started to get on top.
In the final quarter the match completely changed tempo and after three close quarters to start with the game opened up with higher scoring.
It went the way of Ghost Squad to the tune of 21-17 to give them the five point win.
The quality of the decider a testament to both sides who were put together at the start of the season comprising players who were keen to play but didn’t have teams.
Desperados were a strong chance of taking out the title but in the end the experience of Ghost Squad proved too much.
Jacob Edmonds was named MVP.
Ghosts’ top scorers were Lachlan Hart 15 and Zac Burley 13, and for Desperados Andrew Channon and Sam Gorrie 11 each.
Steven Marshall and Kaylee Consadine were awarded as juniors in A Grade.
