Gulgong will celebrate its Chinese heritage this weekend with the second annual Gulgong Chinese Gold Festival. The event celebrates the large Chinese community that came to the region during the gold rush of the nineteenth century.

The festival will begin with a parade through the centre of town on Saturday morning, followed by a range of events at Red Hill and a bush dance that evening at the Gulgong RSL..
The parade will start from Gulgong RSL at 11am, taking Medley Street and Mayne Street to finish at Red Hill. The streets will be closed to cars and filled with drummers, rickshaws and martial artists, as well as an enormous Chinese dragon constructed by Gulgong school students.
Red Hill will host a broad variety of activities from 11.30am to 3pm, including games and contests, craft activities, souvenir photography, chalk drawing and food stalls.
Thai To You will serve noodle boxes, and the Ladies Bowls group will have a barbecue as well as tea and coffee, cakes and slices. Ice cream and slushie vans will serve cool treats. A chocolate wheel will be giving away prizes from local businesses, including vouchers, gift packs, pizza vouchers and useful items.
The Gulgong Gold Experience will be open and $2 will buy either a license for gold digging or a chance to try gold panning. Entry to the Red Hill precinct will be $5 or $10 for a family.
Sunday’s camel races planned have been postponed to November due to the wetness of the track.
