The PJL Constructions Mudgee Rugby Sevens has developed into one of Country NSW’s leading rugby events, drawing players and teams from across the state and even from Fiji – the world’s top nation in the sport.
All places in the tournament are booked, with 24 men’s teams as well as eight women’s teams which is a significant increase on last year.
In an endorsement of the event one of the returning women’s teams from the Hunter are skipping a Newcastle event to attend.
Among the returning men’s sides are Deadwood RC’s two teams, Cornwallis Crusaders, Warringah, and West Harbour, as well as country teams from as far away as Cobar and Armidale.
What’s more, NSW prop, and Mudgee local, Matt Sandell will be on hand for the Waratahs Rugby Sevens School Holiday Camp the day before the Sevens.
The camp will give the region’s juniors a taste of the skills and discipline needed to succeed in the modified version of the sport, and the chance to learn from one of the nation’s best up-and-coming bookends in Sandell.
The camp will start at 9am and run to 3pm on Friday, October 7 at Glen Willow Sporting Complex.
“Rugby sevens is a game for all shapes and sizes, come and give it a go by enrolling in the camp. Learn every sevens skill and then play the game,” NSW Rugby central west development officer Jarrod Simpson said.
“This is a great way for kids to learn and enjoy the fun of the game of rugby sevens. NSW Rugby development staff are conducting sevens specific drills and games.”
