While many of their rivals had mechanical issues or crashed out, the duo stayed out of trouble in their #6 Monster Energy Racing Ford and Waters steered it across the line in fourth.
Given Waters went into the Great Race sitting 32nd in the drivers’ championship and the duo had a DNF at last month’s Sandown 5000, it was a surprise result.
“I'm absolutely wrapped with the result. We've had a lot of bad luck recently, so it's really good to get a good result for all the boys and the whole team,” 22-year-old Waters said.
“We were so close to third and I was trying everything I could, but I just fell short. Wrapped with it, it was so close. We'll just keep building on that and I'm just happy to actually finish and stay out of trouble and actually get a good result."
