In a strong men’s field of 21 triathletes, Kastelein blitzed the bike leg in 30:10mins to put him ahead of the pack into the 3km run with Emmett Karstrom and Kieren Bennetts in hot pursuit.
All three were out of the swim leg in under six minutes and had the bike leg under control in less than 32 minutes but it was the fast run that mattered, Kastelein’s super effort to hold off the competitors saw him run the 3km in 12:39 minutes.
Bennetts, who ran just one second slower, was using the club race as preparation for the Noosa Triathlon festival on October 30, where he’ll race the standard distance.
Kastelein was first on 48:51mins, Emmett Karstrom second on 49:57mins and Kieren Bennetts third on 50:11mins.
Overall times are typically slower at the first race of the season with most competitors lacking swim training.
However, perfect racing conditions ensured a great morning’s competition with some commendable times across the board.
