Her time with Petries dates back to the year they purchased the hardware store from Loneragan’s.
For a number of years at the Mortimer Street store, and then at the current location, Barbara ran the housewares department.
On Tuesday Annette Fergus said that she “helped with the growth of Petries” and “works hard to get what ever the customer needs, right down to a valve on an Esky”.
Also recounted were bonfires she held and her ability to know whose children were on the phone asking for mum or dad.
Barbara now works weekends at the store and said there’s a symmetry to her service in that, “I started on check-outs and I’m back on check-outs”.
She also joked, “it must’ve been a pleasure to work here or I wouldn’t have stayed so long, or no one else would have me”.
