Bartenders behind the bar at The Oriental, Paragon Hotel, Lawson Park Hotel and Prince of Wales Gulgong have been sporting ‘I’m UGLY’ shirts for the Leukaemia Foundation’s U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year.
U.G.L.Y. (Understanding, Generous, Likeable You) bartenders are fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation’s accommodation services, a cause close to the heart of the Oriental Hotel’s Elle Brydon.
Elle’s father, John, was diagnosed earlier in the year with acute myeloid leukaemia, requiring long periods of treatment at Nepean hospital in Penrith.
“It has been a really tough experience for both my parents,” Elle said.
‘My mum Jannell has spent almost every day by his side at hospital.
“Luckily she has been looked after and housed in the Hope Cottage at the Nepean Hospital.
“Without the support of the Leukaemia Foundation and Hope House it would have been impossible for my parents to be together for this long in this tough period.”
John has been scheduled for a bone marrow transport on December 1, which will require him to be based in Sydney for at least four months over Christmas. The Leukaemia Foundation has organised accommodation during this time.
Thinking about what the Leukaemia Foundation has done for her family and all families in need over the years has given Elle the motivation to take her fundraising for an extra step.
On November 11, Elle and fellow Oriental Hotel U.G.L.Y. participants Alex Huish and Maddi Nicholls will shave their hair to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The headshave and fundraising auction begin at 6pm. Donations can also be made www/gofundme.com/gettingbaldforjohn
“The number of bartenders signing up to become U.G.L.Y. is growing each year and their generosity is ensuring the Foundation can continue to provide a free ‘home-away-from-home’ to rural and remote families who are touched by a blood cancer diagnosis,” Leukaemia Foundation’s head of fundraising Dave Simms said.
