That’s one of the questions young mathematicians pondered in the Mudgee Mathematical Minds (M3) at St Matthew’s School last month.
Thirty-six of the best young mathematicians from schools around the region competed in M3, which put mathematics on equal terms with spelling bees and other educational contests
Organised by the Rotary Club of Mudgee and mathematics teachers from St Matthew’s, M3 required teams to solve challenges in groups and individually.
Teams from St Matthews, Kandos Public and Rylstone Public schools were the winners of stage 3 and stage 5 winners were teams from St Matthews and two teams from Mudgee High School.
The winning teams in each division received $1000 for their school, with $500 for second place and $250 for third place.
They also received trophies and each student received a gold, silver and bronze medal.
The marking and scoring were tabulated by Mudgee Rotarians, Mark Herford and Ross Hearne.
The prize money was provided by Moolarben Coal, KEPCO Bylong Coal, the Rotary Club of Mudgee and the Rotary Club of Mudgee Sunrise.
The organisers are grateful for the sponsorship and are hoping to continue the event next year.
