Members of the Mudgee Day VIEW Club found out at their November meeting, where Anthea Nicholls was the guest speaker.
Mrs Nicholls, her husband Tony, and three children aged 16, 13 and 9 years, relocated to Ottawa after Tony, a science teacher, had the opportunity to take part in an exchange program through Canadian League for Educational Exchange
“We did it as a family and it has opened up the world to the kids,” Mrs Nicholls said.
“Part of it was to show them that it is a big world.”
Although Canada is “as far away from Australia as you can get”, the family quickly adapted to their adopted home.
However, arriving at midnight in the middle of the longest and coldest Canadian winter in memory required a “quick readjustment” about what cold weather means, Mrs Nicolls said.
The family’s experiences included skating on the frozen canals of Ottawa, visiting the Carnaval de Quebec (Quebec Winter Carnival) and exploring around Ottawa and the surrounding regions.
Mr Nicholls was the fourth teacher from Mudgee to participate in the Canadian exchange program.
Mudgee Day VIEW Club members wore hats to the November lunch meeting in honour of Melbourne Cup Day earlier in the week.
At the October meeting, the dress code was pink in for “Pink Up Mudgee”.
The club members congratulated Pat Sutcliffe, who celebrated her 90th birthday and her 70th wedding anniversary in October.
Guests at the October meeting were Kate Rogers, Coral McFarland, Linda Foote and Annette Petrie of the Children’s Medical Research Institute Mudgee committee, who spoke about the group’s 50 years of fundraising for research into childhood diseases.
Mudgee Day VIEW will hold its final meeting for 2016 on December 2. The Christmas themed meeting will be held at the Mudgee Golf Club at 11.30 for 12 noon .
VIEW members and guests will be entertained by Jim Yeo and Peter Stoddart.
New members are always welcome, so come along and enjoy our last meeting for the year.
Phone Lana for catering purposes by midday Tuesday, November 29 to confirm attendance.
