NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Cudgegong District acting manager, Andrew Williams said they’ve been sending strike teams from the district.
“We’ve been sending about two lots of five trucks everyday – which is up to 40 volunteers each day – to help out on the fire ground.
“The volunteers have done a wonderful job in giving up their time to help out.
“It’s been a very difficult fire for them at Orana – it’s very hard and inaccessible country.
“Using the larger aircraft like the Skycrane Helicopter and the Tankers is essential for the safety of the firefighters.”
But Mr Williams warns the fire danger isn’t over.
“Even though the fire is within containment lines, we’ll still see smoke and there is still a possibility of flare ups.
“Crews will continue the back burning and containment work over the next few days.
“Cudgegong District has been requested to supply strike teams on the fire ground for the next few nights. We wont supply any day crews but we will supply another five trucks for the night shift.
“If the Orana District request any more crews – we’ll give them more.”
Firefighting crews will have to battle extreme conditions over the next new days with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting the temperature will reach 37 today and 39 on Wednesday.
