In Mudgee, the week culminated in a morning tea and awards ceremony at the Mudgee Health Service Wellness Centre, where nursing unit manager Margo Mackenzie recognised the hard work of many ‘behind-the-scenes’ workers.
“Volunteers are crucial for the health deparment,” Ms Mackenzie said of the honoured recipients.
“We run many programs here and staff numbers are often not as high as we may want, so they step up to help us attend the clients and the groups.”
Ms Mackenzie believes that showing off the talents and efforts of the volunteers is a key part of the system, especially given their roles in the community can potentially go unnoticed.
“I think this work goes under the radar a bit and we don’t stop and praise the efforts of these hard workers enough,” she said.
“The responses I’ve had from the invitations and the awards that we gave out shows that the recognition is really appreciated by the volunteers, so we should put them in the spotlight more often.”
People interested in assisting can express their interest on the Western NSW Local Health District website, or contact their local facility directly and ask to speak to their local Health Service Manager.
