When completed the museum will display the UNESCO listed Holtermann Gulgong and Hill End gold rush photographs.
The project is transforming the The American Tobacco Warehouse Company and The Greatest Wonder of the World buildings into the museum with multifunction pavilions and niche study areas forming part of the design.
The project secured clubGrants funding of $278,000 specifically for Stage 2 works – the construction of sympathetic pavilions to complement the existing heritage listed buildings.
Preparatory earthworks and final Stage 1 demolition have commenced ready for Stage 2 building works funded by clubGrants.
Stage 3 will be the further restoration of the two famous existing buildings and the setting up of the multimedia and interactive plus static displays within.
These cutting edge exhibits will highlight Gulgong’s 1870s Gold Rush, its preserved architecture and the town’s contribution to colonial Australia’s economy and multiculturalism.
Fittingly Gulgong is well represented in the Holtermann collection of glass plate negatives, which are held by the State Library of NSW who have given their full support.
The project has benefited from generous community support during construction.
Including from the Commercial Hotel up the road, where bar staff have worked to build towers of coins – over $1000 worth - to be donated to the Holtermann project.
This kind of support and enthusiasm will need to continue, particularly as Stage 3 looms.
The works and the provision of the museum displays and extensive equipment, software and IT equipment infrastructure, plus the final payment for the site later this year will require considerable financial support.
