Flying high as undefeated competition leaders, Cargo has fallen at its first hurdle of the 2017 Woodbridge Cup season, going down 40-34 in a thriller against defending premiers Condobolin.
The Rams have burly frontrower Adam Richards to thank for the big win, the impressive prop scoring a double, including the match-winner, in Condo’s shock road victory over the Heelers, one Cargo led 18-16 and then later 34-22 mid-way through the second half.
Last weekend’s round had some surprise wins, adding further intrigue to what is shaping up as a bumper 2017 season for the second division competition.
The big match at Jack Huxley Oval, the Peak Hill Roosters stunned the hosts, upsetting the Rhinos 20-14 to maintain a spot in the competition’s top five.
Last year’s runners-up and guided by Adam Hall, Trundle Boomers, as expected, proved too good for a spirited Eugowra Eagles, a club battling player numbers in 2017.
The Boomers ran out winners 30-10, while Canowindra took care of business against the Burrangong Bears 42-6 in a battle of the competition cellar dwellers.
But the round belonged to Condobolin, the Rams opening the scoring thanks to a Blake Perry try early in the piece at Cargo Oval before the hosts fought back with tries to Matt McLean, Matt Taylor and then Tory Madden to lead at half-time.
But drawing on all the fighting spirit the Rams used to win the 2016 premiership, Condo hit back to clinch a 40-32 win on the road. Grenfell had the bye.
