I see my lovely city girl
In the glow of the neon lights
That blind her from the view
Of the twinkling stars at night
And the white clouds at evening
As they drift towards the sea
Or where the breeze may take them
It’s a sight she’ll never see.
For the shadows of tall buildings
That line the city’s streets
Will always cast their shadows
Where the night girls like to meet
And the noisy crowded thoroughfares
With thousands of tramping feet
That seem to tramp on forever
Will they never ever cease?
But the dark and grimy city
Will never ever beckon me
For I love the high bush country
With nature’s beauty there to see
And when the evening sun is setting
In the blue hills of the west
I hear the night birds calling
As they waken from their rest.
So come my city sweetheart
To a country life with me
And I’ll show you nature’s wonders
Where in the city you’ll never see
Like the dewdrops of early morning on the violets and the rose
You’d hear the call of the friendly ‘Jacko’
And see the rivers as they run.
So stay there in the city
With the blindness of your sight
And I’ll stay here in the mountains
Where I can see the stars at night
And hear the bush birds calling
Where the gum and wattle grow
But the beauty of God’s own country
Is an experience you will never know.
