In a similar opening to last season, the Hairy Globetrotters have recorded two wins for themselves, going back to back against new entrant team PCYC as well as Country Physio.
The first win was a tight affair, with the Globetrotters coming out ahead 57-51, while the round two clash with Country Physio was 52-41.
The competition has seen a few changes in the opening weeks, as a number of juniors requested entry into the championships.
Because of this, the Country Physio squad has been divided into three teams, increasing the competition from the regular six teams to an eight team tournament.
This came after discussion from the committee, who had to decided whether the competition could support the expansion.
This also means that Country Physio may not be as strong as they were initially predicted to be, especially after losing Liam Young.
Young has moved to Mayso’s Pro Shop for the 2017 season so their eyes will now turn to the incoming juniors to bolster the side.
Crystal Clear Rams, last year’s grand finalists, had to forfeit their first match against Ghost Squad but bounced back to defeat Lawson Park 45-44 in another close battle.
Their points may be removed due to administration rulings however, as neither referee or scorer were supplied from the squad.
Although they went down to the Rams in their second round, the Lawson Park squad had already bagged in a win for the season in the opening round.
They put on a show against the Reds as they won 64-27, and the competition will now watch carefully to see if the Lawson team can emulate their 2016 form.
Mayso’s Pro Shop has also recruited a number of new players this season after an disappointing final stanza in the 2016 season.
Their off-season movements seemed to have paid off early as they downed both Ghost Squad 75-47 and Country Physio 80-51.
The new squad representing the PCYC seems to be a ready-made talent pool, and is chockfull of rising young stars from Mudgee.
After a win over the Reds 54-31, their narrow loss to the Globetrotters may be telling of how they will perform this season.
Their Achilles heel could lack of experience against the big guns of Lawson Park, Mayso’s Pro Shop and Crystal Clear Rams, when the play offs come round.
