Chamber vice president Andrew Palmer said that in addition to being used as gift cards there are a variety of other uses that will still achieve the goal of keeping people shopping local.
“We’ve approached large businesses, sporting clubs and organisations, with the idea that these would be given out as bonuses and prizes,” he said. “It’s also an idea for a petty cash float for businesses.
“There’s a lot of opportunities for the cards, we just need them out there in the community, and being used.”
Justin Smith, from Why Leave Town (who run the gift card program), was on hand to talk about how Mudgee Money would work. He said the program has been around since 2011 and runs in around 16 communities.
“No business has pulled out and it’s growing fairly rapidly at the moment,” he said. “In this area there is definitely potential if businesses get behind it and the town gets involved.”
