The visitors – managed a win over Terriers in Round 2 – were well in the match for a long period and did enough to suggest that they will be a tough outfit to roll as the season progresses, taking it to 10 all at half time.
However, the home side flexed their muscles against the Magpies following the break, Brad James and Cameron Milburn each scored a double while Robbie Dowton and James Morrison also ran in tries, with James booting five out of six goals.
The Terriers’ second place helped by the Gilgandra juggernaut rolling on – and over – the Coonamble Bears who were previously level with the Gulgong side.
The Panthers’ win also means the Boronia Cup will remain in Gilgandra after the home side registered a 34 to 20 win.
Gulgong will have to defend their second place right away this weekend when they travel to Coonamble to take on the Bears, before heading into the bye the following Saturday.
At Coonabarabran the Unicorns played out a thrilling 30 all draw with the Dunedoo Swans, and while they split the two competition points the door to a semi final berth is still well and truly open to the Swans, as they sit just one point adrift of the fourth placed Unicorns on the competition table.
In Coolah, the Roos threw away a 18 to 6 half time lead over Baradine to ultimately go down 34 to 24.
In the League Tag, the top of the table Dunedoo bounced back from their first loss of the 2017 season the previous weekend to down Coonabarabran 30-nil.
The Swannettes were lining up with six separate try scorers – Jami Roberts, Lauren Sullivan, Becci Sciberras, Kylee Callow, Lucy Guan, and Sophie Christ.
And the Pink Panthers leapfrogged Coonamble into second place on the ladder when they downed the Bearettes 20 to 16 in an entertaining game.
