Mid-Western Regional Council mayor Des Kennedy said the community is looking forward to coming together to celebrate the iconic trophy.
“This year marks 100 years since Westcourt, a horse with historic ties to Mudgee, won the Melbourne Cup. I think it’s very fitting, and exciting, that the iconic Melbourne Cup trophy can visit Mudgee and help us celebrate this great piece of local history. Being part of the Tour will provide a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this and horse racing in the region,” he said.
Racing legend Wendy Green, best known as the woman whose faith in her horse paid off to maximum benefit after Rogan Josh won the 1999 Melbourne Cup, will also be in attendance to share her unique Emirates Melbourne Cup story. Referred to as ‘Wendy in Wonderland’, Green jointly owned Rogan Josh with her son John-Paul Miller and husband Robert.
Victoria Racing Club Chairman, Amanda Elliott said the VRC is excited to bring the magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup to the people of Mudgee.
“The Melbourne Cup is an Australian cultural icon and is truly the People’s Cup, so we’re delighted to share it with the people, on this its fifteenth annual tour of Australia and New Zealand,” Mrs Elliott said.
The famous trophy will visit 31 destinations across Australia and New Zealand, starting in West Wyalong in regional NSW, where the gold used by ABC Bullion to make the trophy is mined, before returning to Flemington for ‘the race that stops a nation’ on the first Tuesday in November.
Since its inaugural year, the Tour has travelled more than 494,000 kilometres and visited more than 377 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations.
