McCaffrey will join the Brumbies in the coming months after agreeing to a deal to link with the Brumbies.
The journeyman back-rower has played for the NSW Waratahs, Western Force, the Brumbies, London Welsh and the Leicester Tigers since making his debut in 2010.
The 27-year-old will add punch to the Brumbies' back row after Jordan Smiler and Jarrad Butler both left Canberra at the end of the Super Rugby season.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing overseas and had some wonderful experiences playing for both London Welsh and the Leicester Tigers," McCaffrey said.
"I felt, however, that I needed a new challenge and explored the opportunity of returning home.
"The Brumbies have given me a chance to play Super Rugby once more and I am aiming to repay their confidence in my abilities by helping the team towards another Super Rugby title."
McCaffrey played eight games for the Brumbies in 2014 before leaving Canberra to join London Welsh.
The Brumbies are expected to add scrumhalf Matt Lucas in the coming days, while former Waratah Peter Hewat will be the club's backs coach next year.
