The school students are heading to Sydney to assist and help the homeless community, making and delivering meals for them.
The visit also coincides with the community movement’s fifth anniversary, to be celebrated on Thursday, August 31, with an event planned for the not-for-profit student volunteering program.
The co-founders of the program Ruth Tofler-Riesel and Carole Schlessinger believe that Kids Giving Back has already had a positive influence in “a world where youth-related issues like bullying, isolation, depression and suicide are on the rise.”
“Kids Giving Back is working closely with educators, schools and experts to give students a greater sense of resilience, empathy and empowerment,” they said.
“We will be hearing from a range of experts speakers including Kids Giving Back founders, homeless community partner Rough Edges, educators and government representatives about how volunteering addresses youth and community issues.”
As well as the speakers appearing, the event will also feature regional school students from Kandos High, who will be delivering home-cooked meals to members of the Rough Edges homeless community.
After they have participated in the event, the Kandos students will have a chance to explore Kings Cross, to get a better idea of the issue of homelessness in a very real way.
The event also marks a big milestone for the charity program, with more than 10,000 children and families having already volunteered, and over 30,000 meals prepared and delivered to the homeless community in need.
