In a comedic video framed as if Ken was commentating his own hearing check-up, the organisation urges thousands of Australians to get their hearing checked.
The tongue-in-cheek video shows just how simple and quick a hearing check can be.
Australian Hearing encourages the public to visit one of over 600 fixed and mobile venues across Australia for a free, five-minute hearing check.
Ken’s involvement is mainly due to the sports theme for this year’s event, and the use of a familiar face from years of media coverage aims to break down the stigma attached with hearing loss.
Although Ken admits that he’s enjoying retirement a little too much to actually return to the limelight, the chance to become the face of a great cause was too tempting to turn down.
“It’s a great campaign encouraging people to get in and do these five minute hearing check-ups,” Ken explained.
“I’m involved because they have a sports spin on it and so we got to have a bit of fun with it and poke fun at me with the promo.
Although the video itself is rather comedic in nature, the message that Ken is bringing is important.
“Hearing isn’t a life or death thing, so it’s kind of put on the back-burner by a lot of people,” Ken said.
“Every time you don’t do something about it though it’s diminishing your lifestyle and ruining your life a bit. People around you can’t talk to you and you’re always cocking your head a bit.
“In my walk of life I have the problem because of things like broadcasting in front of 80,000 people at ANZ and trying to hear my director for the broadcast. It’s also common for people on farms who are working with machinery and mechanics a lot.”
