Running a small retail business can often be challenging and success is built upon a foundation of dedication, drive, passion, resilience, flexibility and a genuine care for customers.

These building blocks have served Darryl and Phillipa Adams well, the married couple set to celebrate a rare retail milestone this September: 50 years at the helm of their electronics business.

Phillipa, 76, and Darryl, 79, began their journey in 1967, deciding to buy the business Darryl was working for and go out on their own.

With a sound background in electronics, the technically savvy Darryl was the “driving force” behind the business, Phillipa said, and the main reason for their longevity in a continually changing industry.

“Electronics is the love of his life,” she said. “Well, except for me!

“Darryl has always loved helping people solve their technical problems, show them how to hook things up and get the most out of their products. And he still builds things today.”

Phillipa has always been Darryl’s “right-hand man”, looking after the bookwork and administration.

Along the way their enterprise was aligned with Tandy Electronics, Dick Smith and, for the last eight years they have been a Jaycar stockist.

The couple will continue to offer customers the latest in consumer electronics goods and hobbyist electronic components – until the right offer comes along.

“We are both hale and hearty, love each other and love this country,” Phillipa said. “But we are starting to think about retirement.”
