Saturday was the hottest September day on record at two of the Mid-Western region’s weather stations as the thermometer made a rare trip into the thirties two months out from summer.

The Mudgee Airport Weather Station saw 32.5°C setting a new record comfortably.
The previous highest, set back in 2006, barely creeped into the thirties at 30.1°C, with this Wednesday also a possibility of passing the old benchmark with 31°C forecast.
In the Rylstone/Kandos area the Nullo Mountain Weather Station also saw a record set on Saturday at 26.4°C – nearly two degrees up on the previous hottest.
This was followed by the hottest ever September overnight temperature recorded at the location, only dropping to 18.4°C in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday, which was nearly a full degree over the previous record.
Gulgong didn’t quite set a new record, with the mercury hitting 32.6°C which was half a degree short of the highest September day there back in 1980.
According to Weatherzone.com.au over 100 different stations had their hottest September day or night in at least a decade, including new state records in New South Wales and Victoria.
Wilcannia - in NSW's northwest – now holds the state record for the highest September temp at 40.5 °C on Saturday. This is due to the complex low pressure system and trough continuing to bring hot and windy conditions to northern NSW and southern Queensland on the weekend and for the following few days.
With a substantial cool change for these areas not expected until next Saturday, with a strong cold front. The dry weather continues with all three weather stations receiving a fraction of their average rainfall so far.
