Cheryl Grieff posed the question on the Mudgee Community Group Facebook page on Friday, September 22.
“For the last few years MWRC has not decorated the town for Christmas for fear of offending non Christians- we are a Christian country primarily - let's lobby them to reinstate this - children love seeing the lights and santas as do adults. Hopefully people power will prevail,” the post read.
Some respondents questioned the validity of the statement, pointing out there were lights decocting the trees in the Mudgee CBD last year.
Others supported the Christmas decoration push, with one comment reading, “I'll stop paying my council rates cause in non Christian countries they don't have council rates.”
Another simply posted #askMWRC – this is the hashtag that the Council encourages residents to use on social media.
The Council responded on Monday via their Facebook post.
“Each year Council decorates buildings and parks from December through to January. Last year, a key Council building in Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone was decorated and in previous years Council has installed tree lighting and worked with local businesses to co-ordinate shop front displays.”
The post continued, “Council is proud to support Christmas celebrations across the region, last year providing $15,500 for Christmas Carol events.”
