And even though the Mug itself is headed to Coonamble – thanks to Prettylittlefellow, pictured – there was still joy on the day for local trainers.
Infinate Advantage, trained by Gulgong’s Brett Thompson, took out the Hahn CG&E maiden plate (1100m) to open the day’s racing.
It was a 1-2 finish for the region’s trainers in the race, the three-year-old bay colt leading home Gayna Williams’ The Penguin.
Williams’ scored in Race 3, the XXXX Summer Class 1 Handicap (1200m), with Noel’s Gift adding to his breakthrough win in the Narromine Maiden Showcase Plate back in August.
The Thompson pair of Little Bitty and Miss Hassletoff were just off placing in the Iron Jack Benchmark 50 Handicap (1400m), finishing third and fourth respectively.
The race taken out by the Dubbo-trained Magic Archer, of Garry Lunn’s stable, the six-year-old’s second win since being freshened five weeks from July to August.
The day’s main event, the XXXX Gold Mudgee Mug Benchmark 50 Handicap (1600m), was won by Prettylittlefellow trained by Cecil Hodgson of Coonamble. A last start winner following victory in Gulargambone on October 14, both times with jockey Vad Bolozhinskyi on board. Local hopes rode with Thompson’s Ad Valeica but were dashed with the four-year-old bay gelding coming home in tenth.
The five-race meeting was the last for the local race club before the Mudgee Cup on December 1.
