Michael Hooper's team departed Sydney on Tuesday evening for Japan where they will spend the week before a clash with the Cherry Blossoms.

From there, the Wallabies will head to Cardiff for an outing against Wales before matches against England and Scotland to finish the tour.

Morale is high within Wallabies camp after they beat New Zealand and in doing so broke a seven-game drought against their trans-Tasman rivals.

This time last year, the Wallabies had won just three of 10 Tests for the year before notching victories against Wales, Scotland and France to get their grand slam campaign off to a perfect start.

Foley is hoping the Wallabies can take momentum from the Suncorp Stadium encounter on the tour but wants to ensure they don't get too big-headed about their 23-18 triumph.

"Off the back of a win two weeks ago, we can't hang our season on that," Foley told Fairfax Media. "We have to keep getting better and have that winning attitude and mindset. We're going to come up against different conditions and different styles, but as a side we've got to show that resilience that we can win away from home.

"I wouldn't say it was a relief - it was a just reward for what the squad has been going through. We've worked extremely hard and have probably been close but have not been close enough throughout the Rugby Championship. The resilience and belief the team showed, especially in the dying moments where in the past we would have lost those games, was really encouraging."

Foley featured in all five Tests on last year's spring tour where the Wallabies were beaten by Ireland and then England in their quest for grand slam glory.

This will be Foley's fifth end-of-year tour to Europe - including the World Cup in 2015 - and he has picked up some valuable lessons in his time for overseas trips.

Foley believes Australia's first assignment against Japan - the world's 11th-ranked side - won't be as easy as some might think.

"Every game is a tough game and whenever you go on these tours, you've just got to prepare the best you possibly can because they've got such quality players and they're just such tough environments to win in," Foley said. "The Japanese are probably our biggest threat to start with because the nature of how they play. They're a dangerous and threatening side and they're going to challenge us in a different style.

"I know a few of the players from when I went up there [to play in the Top League] and some who play in Super Rugby. When they played those June games [against Ireland] they really backed their skills, they've got great energy and they work really hard. They're definitely a formidable side."

Young gun Jack Maddocks, who will go on the tour as a development player, has completed his first few sessions with the Wallabies.

Foley has liked what he has seen but has known about Maddocks for a some time.

Maddocks starred for the NSW Waratahs under-20s side last year and Foley has kept an eye on the promising fullback.

"I know him through the under-20s and when he was still at school the Waratahs were really excited to get him but he opted against us and went down to Melbourne," Foley said. "He's an exciting player and he's got raw talent and offers a lot because of his ability just to attack. He's a natural athlete."
