Life lessons learnt under the bonnet

Car dealership, Mudgee Toyota, has been a strong supporter of the Mudgee High School LINK Program by providing work experience to students in the automotive industry.

David Payne, the community mentor with the LINK Program, states that the automotive sector is quite popular.

“The students see a career in this industry as interesting and providing a reliable future for employment,” he said.

At Mudgee Toyota, the students are learning a wide range of activities in a modern automotive workshop. Students are well supported by qualified staff in the workshop and are exposed to many aspect of being employed in a relatively large local business.

Student, Billy Flack, has completed two school terms with Mudgee Toyota where he was able to attend one day each week and gain a practical insight into a career in which he has a strong interest.

“I am very interested in getting an apprenticeship next year as a mechanic and work experience has let me have the chance to try it out to make sure I like it. It has been really good working at Mudgee Toyota and will definitely try and get an apprenticeship as a mechanic next year.”

Craig McGrath, manager of the service section with Mudgee Toyota, regularly supports Mudgee High Schools work experience programs.  He sees this support as an opportunity to give something back to the community by helping local students make decisions about future career paths.

The Mudgee High School LINK Program is an initiative developed in partnership with and has ongoing support of Glencore Coal and TAFE Western.
