They finished day one undefeated before succumbing to some of the best sides in Australia on the second day.

Although they were winless on day two, Mudgee had already sent shock waves through the touch community when they knocked off third-ranked Canterbury Bulldogs.

The 7-6 victory, plus the 6-2 win over Yamba, put Mudgee into the top division at the end of day one.

It was the first time a side from Mudgee had qualified for the Championship in any division.

Mudgee Touch spokesman Ben Harris said qualifying for the Championship was a huge achievement.

“We are relatively a small touch club compared to the ones from Sydney,” Harris said.

“It was actually a talking point at the tournament as the players had people come up to them and say stuff like ‘you’re from Mudgee. You beat the Bulldogs’.”

In the Championship, Mudgee lost to Easts Roosters (8-0), Melbourne City (9-2), Melbourne University (9-3) and Port Macquarie (8-6). Roosters defeated Melbourne City in the final.
