Sian Potter might have been the only junior girl to enter the women’s long course event on Sunday but that didn’t stop the 15-year-old from giving it a shake up on her way finishing third.

The junior sensation has been training under the tutelage of Matt Webster and Brendan Sutton and put her hard work on display at Lawson Park.
This was during the last Red Devils competition day of the year before a big 2018 that brings four inter-club events in the first three months.
Not only did Sian defeat the majority of the adult runners, she outlasted her mother Tania who finished seconds behind in fourth position.
Earlier in the day, Sian scored a first place as she blitzed the competition in the female short course, paving the way for her stellar showing in the main event.
“She’s been training exceptionally hard,” said publicity officer Ang Fittler.
“It’s been a cracker of a year for Sian.
“She just beat her mum yesterday which was probably a nice touch to the day for her.”
Matt Webster took out the men’s main event with a two minute triumph over Greg Atkinson (second) and Nick Kastelein (third).
Webster is fresh off a strong inter-club showing where he ran second to the prolific Nick North, so it’s no surprise the seasoned triathlete came home ahead of the rest.
“They were all pretty close for most of the race,” Fittler said.
“Matt ended up winning by two minutes but it was closer in the pool and on the bike.”
Given the time of the year, Fittler commended the crowds that made their way to Lawson Park on Sunday.
“We probably would have had more on a normal day,” Fittler said.
“But you’ve got dancing concerts and Christmas parties and so many other things happening so I think it was an exceptional turnout.”
The Red Devils hosted the first of five inter-club events on November 19 before the Cowra event washed out on December 3.
By the time Sunday rolled around, Mudgee members were stinging for some competition and this was evident as competitors flocked to the gate, seeing junior numbers boom again.
Between the inter-club event in November and the club race on Sunday, Fittler is optimistic about 2018 and beyond.
“It’s gaining momentum,” she said. “A big part of that isn’t only the Little Devils but it’s the overall junior squad.
“We haven’t had a designated junior club with that level of talent before.
“The competition between those young ones is fantastic and that’s building good numbers.”
The Red Devils will go away for the Christmas break before returning to action on January 7 for their fourth club event of the season.
